Asciilands
Chapter 06This site

A guide that shows its working

Asciilands Field Guide is an unofficial guide to Asciilands, written by players. It exists because the in-game Field guide is excellent at telling you what a rule is and poor at telling you what to do about it — and because most of the numbers you need while playing are buried three menus deep.

01Method

Four rules the site is written under

These are not aspirations. They are the constraints that decide what gets published and what gets left out.
01

The game is the source

Recipes, costs, craft times, durability and spell numbers were read from the live client and its in-game Field guide, not from another fan site. Where a number could not be confirmed in either, it is left out rather than estimated.

02

Arithmetic is labelled

A recipe's raw-material cost is derived: the game gives the immediate ingredients, not the logs behind them. Everything the site adds up is marked as derived on the page that shows it, so observed and calculated numbers are never mixed without a label.

03

Every data page carries its build

Asciilands is in open beta and changes often. Data pages state the build they were checked against — currently ca54ab855359, read on 22 October 2026 — so an out-of-date page is obvious rather than misleading.

04

Written, not scraped

Every sentence on this site was written for it. The numbers are facts and are shared with any other guide; the explanations, the five-camp route, the cost expansion and the checklists are not reproduced from anywhere.

02Coverage

Every topic in the in-game guide, and where it is covered

The Field guide has twelve sections and 42 topics. This table is the promise: each one has a home, whether or not that page is published yet. 13 of 42 are live today. The item index sits alongside them: it is a lookup, not a topic of its own.

12 sections. “Planned” means the topic is assigned to a chapter that is written but not published yet, not that it is unsourced.

03Sources

Where the facts come from

Four sources, all of them the game or its developer. No other fan site is used as a source, though all of them are worth reading.
04Credits

Everything visual here belongs to the game

No illustration on this site was drawn for it. The item icons and the screenshots are the developer's, used to describe the game they belong to.

Item icons

The 144×144 SVG icons the game draws in its Field guide and container screens, served from asciilands.io and re-encoded here for size. Where an item has no icon in the game, this site shows a blank slot rather than an invented one.

Screenshots

The promotional captures published on asciilands.io, credited wherever they appear. They show the developer's world, not a character created for this guide.

Asciilands' rendering is derived from Asciicker by gumix / msokalski under the MIT licence.

05Changes

What changed on this site

Separate from the game's own updates. Each entry says what was added, not just that something was.
  1. v0.22026-10-23

The item index, and a homepage that shows the game instead of a diagram.

    • New: every item in one searchable index, with a panel per item rather than a page per item.
    • Each panel shows where the item comes from, how it is made, what it costs in raw materials and every recipe that uses it.
    • Item panels are deep-linkable: /items/?item=plank.
    • The homepage hero now uses a real in-game scene instead of a characters-only diagram.
    • Chapters and tools on the homepage are now hand-picked and read from the route registry.
  2. v0.12026-10-22

First release: eight pages, five camps, every verified recipe.

    • Home, Play, First hour, Recipes, World, Controls, FAQ and About published.
    • Recipe finder with per-recipe raw-material cost.
    • Region-by-region material map, with a reverse lookup.
    • Ticked-off progress for the five camps, stored in the browser.
